Our first documentary class at Beijing Center of Photography (BCP) started on May 21, 2010.

It’s a small class with only three students , Carol Vargas and Valentina Burger-Jimenez from Columbia and Margie Scarpignato from USA.
The class was taught by Lance Lee, our creative director and chief instructor of BCP.

<img src="http://blog.beijingcp.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/students400.jpg" alt="Documentary Photography Students at Work" title="students400" width="400"
Although Carol and Valentina are both from Columbia, they have not met before this class. Their common passion for documentary photography brought them together.

This documentary class consists of six lessons, with more practical shooting sessions than theory lessons. We started the first day with a lesson on gaining trusts and photographing with an open mind.

Shooting began at a hairstyling academy north of Xidan, a popular shopping district for young people in Beijing. The hairstyling academy is a vocational training for people from all walks of life. Most of the students are young adults coming from other parts of China in search for a hairstyling career in Beijing. Some are old retiree ladies who want to keep themselves busy. Apart from students and teachers, many friendly neighbors frequent this place for free haircuts and cheap hair dyes and treatment services offered by the students in need of more practice opportunities.

Before the students started shooting, Lance explained that the principal and admin staff of the academy were initially very reluctant to allow photography. Primarily because they were afraid of negative media coverage, their clients might be bothered or we might have ulterior motives for being there. Lance had to visit the school thrice before the class to persuade them to grant permissions, including making a promise to leave immediately if there would be any slightest complaint from anyone.

Keeping in mind of the sensitivities, Carol, Valentina and Margie proceeded with care and sensitivity. They started by making friends with the student hairstylists and made it a point to ask for permission first before shooting. At first, everyone was curious about who we were, walking around with cameras. Soon, the atmosphere eased up, and in no time, most of the students and clients went on with their busy tasks as if we were not around. We deliberately avoided being close to any one who looked easily irritable or impatient. Hanging around the cheerful students who were friendlier helped.

Margie learnt that sharing your digital images is a good way to build trust with the people you photograph.

Thanks to digital cameras, we were able to show the people there what we were shooting rightaway. Almost everyone was amused by how they looked in the photographs, especially since we were all shooting in black & white. Margie was especially surprised because she did not expect it to be so easy. Most photographers starting on a documentary got too excited and started shooting too eagerly before enough trust was established.
